The Q-RACK Journey

The Q-RACK project originated in 2019 when the Industrial Makerspace (IMS) in Landsberg am Lech, Germany, identified a need for bike parking solutions in its coworking infrastructure. The Founder/CEO, Thomas Dittler, approached designer and cycling enthusiast Maruan Attia for support. Collaborating with architect Edgar Bürger, they explored solutions to retrofit bike racks into the IMS campus, which had initially overlooked bike parking in its planning. After deliberation, they decided to repurpose one or two parking spots from the existing lot of 17 car spaces and 12 electric vehicle spaces.

Extensive market research revealed that existing bike racks were insufficient for their needs. Maruan proposed designs that prioritized protecting bike frames and wheels while being removable during winter months to accommodate higher car use. The design also needed to leverage the capabilities of a trusted high-tech CNC metalworking factory, with which Maruan had successfully collaborated on other projects.

The initial concept featured a soft radius flow and a sandwich rubber-bumper lip, which posed significant manufacturing challenges. Multiple suppliers failed to bend the 15mm stainless steel sheets to the required shape. However, with perseverance and custom tooling, the first series (V1) was completed in December 2019. The team installed four stainless steel racks and four orange powder-coated racks on a steel base to monitor durability, ageing, and corrosion over two years.

Encouraged by the V1 performance, Maruan developed an upgraded modular system with integrated charging towers for e-bikes. The Q-RACK system has since evolved to meet diverse requirements, including compatibility with international standards in the U.S., UK, and beyond. Today, Q-RACK offers a customizable and durable solution for modern bike parking and e-bike charging needs.
