GOODLAND, a company with a growing line of design-forward immersive outdoor living products, has launched a Wood Splitting Axe—the first standalone, limited batch product since the launch of their Wood Burning Hot Tub in 2021. Founded by furniture maker and designer Craig Pearce, GOODLAND creates well-designed, minimalist products for cabins, cottages, and homes.

GOODLAND’s first product, a Wood Burning Hot Tub, sold out multiple times and has been celebrated and recognized for its durability and design. This newest product, the Wood Splitting Axe, was designed in partnership with Brant & Cochran, a tool shop based in South Portland, Maine. “Intentionality is important to us in both products and partnerships,” explains Craig Pearce, GOODLAND’s founder, who also established the successful home furnishing brand Union Wood Company in 2009. “For the axe, we knew we wanted to work with craftsmen still doing it the old-fashioned way.”

The lightweight and portable 2.5lb axe are forged in the Maine Wedge pattern—Brant & Cochran are the only current makers of this heritage pattern today. Crafted of premium materials, and designed to stand the test of time, the axe is perfect for splitting firewood or kindling for a campfire, wood stove, or Wood Burning Hot Tub.

“Like everything that we design, our Wood Splitting Axe is meant to tune people into the nature around them,” explains Pearce. “Splitting wood requires us to focus our attention and to be in the present, and we’re excited to offer such a beautiful, handcrafted tool to provide these moments.”

Crafted from 1050 carbon steel, the Wood Splitting Axe is tempered to a hardness of 56-58 to allow it to retain an ultra-sharp edge after many uses. As a nod to tradition, the steel axe head is embossed with both the year that the axe was made and the initials of the maker. The axe also features a 28" hickory handle, set with a black walnut wedge. A tanned leather sheath—included with the Wood Splitting Axe—helps to protect the blade when not in use.

Like all of GOODLAND’s products, the Wood Splitting Axe is inspired by the power of everyday ritual and designed with meticulous attention to the user experience. Beyond simply being an aesthetic object, its durability and quality make splitting wood simple and seamless. Beyond functionality, it’s designed to promote a greater connection with nature and to offer an opportunity to slow down.
